Do you have what it takes to become a very strong chess player?
Many chess players believe that becoming a Grandmaster is simply about memorising thousands of openings, playing endless games, or learning complicated tactics.
But chess improvement goes much deeper.
Your thinking habits, concentration, decision-making, response to mistakes and willingness to learn can tell you a lot about your potential.
I’m Sunil Hireholi, Director & Chief Mentor of Hireholi Lief International Academy, and I approach chess as a Chess Educator + Psychological Performance Coach.
In my latest video, “5 Signs You Could Become a Chess Grandmaster (Most Players Miss #4),” I explain five characteristics that serious chess players should examine.

♟️ 1. You Actually Enjoy Difficult Chess Problems
Strong players don’t always look for easy positions.
They enjoy the challenge of finding solutions when there is no obvious answer.
If you naturally become curious when you see a difficult chess position rather than immediately giving up, that’s an important quality.
Chess rewards curiosity and persistence.
🧠 2. You Can Concentrate When Others Lose Focus
Chess is a battle of decisions.
One careless move can completely change a position.
If you can remain focused even when a game becomes complicated, you’re developing an ability that can help you improve significantly.
This is also one reason chess can be valuable beyond the chessboard.
Better concentration → better decisions → better performance.
🎯 3. You Think Before You Move
Many players play automatically.
They see a move.
They like the move.
They play the move.
Strong players develop a different habit:
Stop → Calculate → Compare → Decide.
Learning to pause before making an important decision is one of the most valuable habits in chess.
And this habit isn’t useful only in chess.
🔥 4. You Learn From Your Mistakes
This is the sign most players miss.
Making mistakes doesn’t automatically mean you’re a bad chess player.
The real question is:
What do you do AFTER the mistake?
Do you become frustrated?
Do you blame luck?
Do you immediately start another game?
Or do you ask:
“Why did I make that mistake?”
Players who analyse their mistakes can turn losses into lessons.
Instead of thinking:
“I lost.”
They start thinking:
“What can this loss teach me?”
That change in thinking can dramatically influence long-term improvement.
🚀 5. You Want Structured Improvement
Watching random chess videos every day isn’t necessarily the same as having a chess improvement system.
Serious learners need to understand:
- What should I study first?
- Which weaknesses should I fix?
- Which openings suit me?
- How should I analyse my games?
- How can I reduce blunders?
- How can I improve my decision-making?
- What should I practise next?
Random learning creates random results.
Structured learning creates a clearer path.
♛ So… Do You Have These Signs?
Having these characteristics doesn’t guarantee that someone will become a Grandmaster.
Grandmaster-level chess requires exceptional ability, disciplined training, competition, coaching, experience and years of serious work.
But these five signs can help you ask a much more useful question:
“Am I capable of becoming significantly better than I am today?”
And that is where real chess improvement begins.
